The game of Video Poker begins when the gambler puts credits (whether it’s tokens, credit slips or cash) into the video poker machine and presses the deal button. A five card hand will then be "distributed" on the screen.
The Electronic Poker machine also has hold buttons, and bettors should now decide which cards to hold and which to discard. After the player has decided on which cards she wishes to keep, they should press ‘draw’, at which point any new cards will be given out if desired. The game is now finished, with the Video Poker machine scanning the cards to see if it is the same as any of the winning hands listed in the pay out schedule.
Generally, the lowest succeeding hand on a Video Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the prize money growing for each better hand. A common list of winning hands begins with jacks or better, moving on to 2 pairs, three of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, four of a kinds, straight flushes and last but not least royal flushes. It is obvious that the payout schedule can vary from machine to machine, so that experienced players are able to pick the most profitable machine every instance.
After the initial round has completed, the player can either decide to continue on in an attempt to maximize their earnings, or press the ‘collect’ button to retrieve any cash that they may have won. Additionally, some versions of the game give the bettor a chance to double their profits, in which instance another hand is played. There are also variations between individual games, with some virtual decks including wild cards and other varying elements to increase playability.
